We shall fight on the beaches (also known as The Vikings are Coming)
It’s not often that a plan comes together to perfection, but you always know with Welshot whatever the challenges, you will have a fantastic and well organised day.
However, the (Norse) gods (and Lee) were in our corner for the Welshot Does… Norse Dragon Vikings shoot, and everything came together perfectly. The day was beautifully sunny, but there was enough cloud to get some shots in the shade, the models were patient and willing, and the costumes were fantastic.
As usual, the day started perfectly on time and groups were small enough for everyone to have plenty of time to get their shot. My group started the morning in Jason’s team, with Emmy Thomson and Rachel Gittins – the best of shield maidens. We wandered through Newborough Forest seeking the shade and Jason provided excellent support in poses and camera settings.Once we’d done some natural light shots, out came the off camera flash and it was powered to beat the sun and overcome the shadows caused by bright light. It was great to have the chance to try something different.
The natural light allowed me to control the depth of field and have a dreamy background. The off camera flash removed dark shadows and gave a great moodiness to the image.
We had moody, beauty type shots along with fighting scenes and guarding shots.
After a lovely break in the sunshine for lunch, we moved onto set two. My group was with Eifion and we had Martin Riley and Alexander Breathnach Both Eifion and the models came up with great ideas for poses. We started off shooting some fighting scenes, moved on to some portraits and then over to ambushes.
All day, I had had a particular image in mind and I politely asked (constantly nagged) Eifion and Jason to take the models down to the beach and have them in front of the sea running towards us. I was so pleased that it really paid off and I think that all the photographers caught a great shot.
We then went back into the sand dunes and practiced for Welshots (Re)create an Album Cover event later in the year.
So all in all, a fantastic day, great company, great weather, lots of laughs, and loads of great shots waiting to be processed.
I can’t end this blog without a shout out for the Models who spent one of the hottest days of the year in full leathers and furs just so we photographer could get great shots. Thanks to Lee, Eifion and Jason for giving us another great day and thanks to Christopher Peet for his great costumes, our Vikings were amazing.
