Welshot Imaging Photographic Academy, photography courses, photography events, photography workshops

I love to teach and help inspire those with a passion for Photography to learn because I get so much out of photography. I want to share what I’ve learned so they can enjoy it too. My techniques are not out of any textbooks so I hope the slightly different approach will help inspire people to do new things.

Introduction – 10.00AM
Meeting 10:00AM for coffee at The Thistle Atlantic Hotel you will have an introductory slideshow showing some ideas on how to compose a great architectural images, Adrian will talk you through images from all over the UK describing the though process behind each image.
Adrian will also show you 10 shots from the Cathedral, which you will be re-creating during the day.
For those who are not familiar, we will go over how to set your camera up to shoot for HDR easily before and after leaving for the location
10.45pm - Leave by transortation, already pre-arranged, for the Cathedral
Capture - 11.00 AM
Armed with ideas from the talk, you will leave the class room and Adrian will take you around the Catherdral, showing you the location of each of the 10 shots discussed in class, demonstrating how to compose and capture them using HDR techniques, and more importantly, discussing the thought process behind each image.
Once the walk around is complete, a worksheet will be handed out and you can split up into smaller groups* around the complex and start to capturing the 10 shots. You can of course capture as many other shots as you like, but for the purposes of the processing session, we will work on the 10 main shots.
* Small groups of 2-3 people means that no one is queuing up to take a photograph and we all get more shooting time.
Leave for the hotel by arranged trasportation at 1.30
Lunch - 1.45PM
Processing - 2.30pm
With HDR, the difference between great images and images that look like cartoons is often the position of one slider. In this session, we will all learn a workflow, which will streamline your HDR experience AND produce great results.
Adrian will work on a projector taking you step by step through the process of how to take your 3 images and create one final fantastic image. After each step, he will come round each delegate to help if you are unclear on anything.
In this session we will follow this Photomatix workflow: -
Copy the images of the 10 shots from your cards into a folder for processing
Learn how “exposure fusion” works in Photomatix
Create a fused image, and save the settings as a “preset” in Photomatix
Use a “Preset” to batch process all 10 images in one go.
Review the batch-processed images; check whether the batch process worked or whether it needs changing.
Once we have the images fused, we will move to Photoshop and learn some essential Photoshop skills. You will be introduced to some very powerful features such as Layers and Actions, these will be useful every time you use Photoshop, not just with architecture: -
Open the image
Run a “Clarify” step using Unsharp Mask – we will record this as an “Action” which you can use over and over again with one click of a button.
Correct verticals using “Rotate Canvas” and “Transform”
Crop creatively
Correct the Levels of the image
Increase contrast with Curves
Use Layers and Masks to “selectively” change contrast
Change “Saturation” to change the balance of colour (this can help with very saturated “unreal” blue skies).
Create a Black and White version – often a good final step.
We will slowly go through 2 or 3 shots on the projector, then you can work on your next image at your own pace, with Adrian being available for 1-2-1 tips and tuition for the rest of the afternoon.
