Thanks as always to the patient Eifion and also to James for whetting my appetite with a new effect...definitely going to try that one out soon.

A Rain cover for your camera isn't something that you would think of normally, until your miles from the car and it's pouring down. I have been photographing Sport for many years and tried various ways of keeping my camera as dry as possible.

The cheapest way is to have a Tesco plastic bag over your camera, the cheap one's work best, and put an elastic band around your lens to keep it in place. This can work ok as a cover in a shower.

Depending on the extent of the rain, you may want to invest in something more substantial. We have some Kata Elemental E-702 covers, these don't come cheap at around £65. They are made from a heavy clear plastic for the body, which covers your camera, and have two black waterproof sleeves which you put your hands through to operate the camera, and drawstrings to tighten them. There is a stiff front cover to accommodate lenses of up to 300mm and a velcro closure to tighten the sleeve. I have used these covers on many occasions and find them great at keeping the camera dry, but due to their size I think they are more suited to being fitted to cameras on a tripod.

A Cheaper option, and one which you can keep in your camera bag, is the OP/Tech RAINSLEEVE.
This is basically an 18 inch clear plastic sleeve with a tie to tighten around the front of the lens, which covers the whole camera and lens combination. There is an eyepiece opening so you are looking through your camera's eyepiece, not through plastic. I have a packet of these in my bag most of the time when outdoors as they don't take up much space and are very affordable at around £6 for two covers.
These are available at Cambrian Photography in Colwyn Bay or on line. Personally this would be my choice, small, easy to carry, cheap, quick to use and not too bulky when fitted.

Always use your lens hood in bad weather, it will help to deflect the rain from your lens, and always carry a clean lens cloth to wipe away the stray drops of rain from the front element of your lens.

Tripods - What to buy??

Tripods are an item of equipment that we all at some time have to use. There is a vast choice of Makes, types and styles for all.
Which one to buy though.
Firstly you need to decide what type of photography it's going to be used for. No use buying a table tripod for photographing Landscapes. I would always suggest a trip down to your local dealer, taking your most used kit with you. You could then try various types with your camera and lens fitted to see firstly how stable that tripod was. No good if it's light and wobbly. Go with an open mind. A very light travel tripod won't support say a Nikon D4 and 70-200 f2.8 combination, you will need something more substantial.
Personally, I like Manfrotto tripods, I have 3 of them. No, not greedy , they all have their uses. I have a fairly heavy aluminium one, used for studio work, a lighter version of the same thing as a general one and a Carbon fibre one for travelling. To these I have the same type of Velbon head fitted, that way the same removable shoe will fit all of them. This is something to bear in mind, often a tripod will not come with a head, so budget for this too.
One useful feature many tripods now have is the centre column turns from the upright position to the horizontal. Very useful if taking images on the ground, this also lets the tripod get much lower than it would if the centre column was still upright.(see the image).

Some good, reliable makes to look out for are, Manfrotto, Velbon, Giotto, Gitzo to name but a few.

So my advice would always to go and see the product before you buy, check it out thoroughly with your gear fitted to it. If you can get to Cambrian Photography in Colwyn Bay, they have a good selection of all styles, prices and of various weights which can be an important factor if travelling. But most of all make sure that it securely supports your camera and lens, which is after all what it is supposed to do.

Radio Triggers to fire Off Camera Flash

There are many types of triggers available on the market to fire Flashguns remotely. The professional types are the Pocket Wizards, which come in TTL versions but are quite expensive if your just a hobbyist, or just starting out in this Genre of photography. Radio triggers are preferable to infra red as they are not affected by the ambient light, they also work at a greater distance, useful when outdoors.

We at Welshot use various types of triggers, at our Academy evenings we need triggers that will work with many different types of camera, Nikon, Canon, Olympus or Pentax to name but a few. So, we need a general type of trigger which will work on any camera, in other words just to fire the flash (No TTL metering) and we would be working in Manual mode with the cameras.
Below are a couple of styles of triggers which we have had for some time now and found to be fairly reliable. We do sometimes get the odd miss fire due to the triggers being used on many cameras during the sessions, but generally they are fine.

Prices can vary from £20 for just one trigger and a receiver to many hundreds for the Professional styles, which can give full TTL metering. Makes to look out for are Yongnuo, iShoot which are very affordable then there are the Twinlink triggers which come between the Cheaper styles and the Pocket Wizards at around £120. Amazon have lots available at all prices, so worth checking these out if you just want to see if you like this genre.

In the first photo you will see that those triggers also come with a couple of adaptor jacks. These are for fitting to Studio lights, so one set of lights doesn't set another off when used in the same room. This is done by selecting a different channel on the triggers. Useful.
