DONNA NOOK Saturday: November 28th

£135.00 Academy Members and £150.00 Non Academy Members
with the option of a Sunday Morning workshop as well at a cost of £60.00
Accommodation will be your own responsibility but we have a couple of suggestions which we can give you on application.

Details of the workshop are below.

The full reserve stretches 10km along the east coast of England. There are several access points to the reserve but we will use the Stonebridge entrance for grey seal photography.
OS: 113 • GR: TF 422998 (Stonebridge entrance) • Map ref: 15

You can see seals and their pups from the dunes close to the car park but this gives you limited scope to get the really great shots.

In order to make the most of photographing grey seals at Donna Nook we need to trek out to sandbanks about one and a half kilometres away. This can take about 30 mins steady walk. It is totally flat, until you reach the slightly raised sandbanks. It will be wet (Wellington Boots are a great idea) cold or windy or all three.

We hope to be out on the sand banks around first light and low tide. The walk is well worth the effort, as you will be able to photograph a variety of grey seals. Bulls, females and pups should all be there. You also get the chance to photograph the seals playing in the surf.

If you want to do some real wildlife photography then the grey seal’s of Donna Nook is the place to be. The rewards will be great and you will get a true wildlife experience.

Donna Nook in Lincolnshire is one of the largest seal colonies in Europe. There are some wonderful opportunities to photograph, new born pups, playful adults, grey’s playing in the surf and bulls fighting over territory and females

November is the ideal time to capture the seals and Welshot will provide you with all the necessary knowledge, advice and tuition to ensure you capture some wonderful images. The whole day is spent in the field with photographic opportunities all around you.

Highlights

Full day of photography
High level ‘in the field’ tuition
The chance to capture action shots
Close up portraits
A true wild adventure

This is probably going to be a bit of a stupid question now, but do you need any particular lenses for taking pics of the seals? ie how close up and personal do we get to them? and are long telephoto lenses essential?

I have a 70-200mm, but unfortunately it is the f4 rather than the f2.8 (I was a bit green when I bought it) so I haven't really got into using an extender cos of that.

Trying to organise things so that I can get to this one :)

Thanks in advance
Marian ;)

Hi Marian,

I only take a 300 max (and sometimes need a converter), but at 200 you will be able to get good shots. If you came on the workshop I will be on hand to show you how to get close without upsetting the seals and pups.. It might involve a bit of kneeling but it really is fun.

Hope that helps..

Feel free to ask questions... Only to happy to answer them...

Steward:)

Hello

There are some superb self catering holiday cottages just about 10 mins or so from DonnaNook beach.

www.cedarparkcottages.co.uk:thumbsup:

There is also a lovely self catering house on Cleethorpes seafront which sleeps 6 people - if there is a crowd of you. Get some shots of the amazing birds on the Humber too. There is a book in the house referring to all the birds that habitat in the Humber.

www.cleethorpesholidays.co.uk:thumbsup:

They do short breaks and welcome you with mince pies and mulled wine.

There is a great pub/restaurant nearby doing an all you can eat Lincolnshire breakfast for 2.99 and an all day carvery - 4 meats, roasties, yorkshire puds, and all you can eat fresh vegetables. £3.69( July 2011)

Just the job after a cold day on the beach snapping away!!:info:

Best time to see the seals - Beginning of November - mid December. By Christmas week almost all the seals have returned to the sea.

Enjoy.
