February Challenge: Your Camera's Functions

This Month we are giving YOU a new Challenge to help YOU understand your camera better.

Each Week in February we will give you a new topic to help you focus on a specific function or technique that you can use to create any image you want.

The only rule is that you have to have used the Function / Setting / Control / Technique that we have told you to use.

When you post your image YOU need to give all the image settings. This includes Shutter Speed, ISO, Aperture, White Balance Details, Lens Used.

The image can be of anything you like. You can post up to three images a week.

This Week (7th Feb - 13th Feb)...
...SHUTTER SPEED.

Your image will need to show that you understand what the Shutter Speed controls ...

For Example, an Fast Shutter Speed will freexze movement and a slow shutter speed will blur the subject.

You can do everything from Traffic Trails, Water Droplets, Waterfalls to Action

The Academy Member that has the wimnning image from each week will go forward to the Grand Final Challenge.

The Winner of the February Challenge will win:

50% off a FULL

Voucher
Valid for 12 Months

Well done to everyone who participated in the first part of the Challenge. We will post the results sometime during this week of the winning Academy Member / Image who will then go into the final Challenge at the end of the month.

We have uploaded an image as an example. You are limited only by your imagination.

Good Luck Everyone and make sure you have some fun while you get the best from YOU Camera.

Does anyone have a prefered shutter speed for capturing movement in the sea? Mine would be around 1/30sec for capturing that movement, yet still still keeping alot of the detail of the moment - althought the shot below was slightly longer exposed at 0.4sec - I guess it depends how fast the sea is moving... Dont try this at home without sufficient water-proofing or rolled-up trousers!

Hey Guys.

It would be nice if the image was taken during the week as this would mean you have specifically taken the image with the requirements in mind.

But as we had not stated this then it is fine to give an images as an example as long as you have the data to support the image.

We are loving all the images that you are posting.

Can I also remind you that you need to sign up for the new website using the link that you were sent. We will be rolling out the next phase in a day or so.

This Week (14th Feb - 20th Feb)...
...ISO.

Your image will need to show that you understand what ISO does ...

For Example, using different ISO values will mean that you can take images in Low Light or without the aid of a Flashgun.

You can take and show as many variations of the same image using a variety of different ISO settings and you can upload up to three (different) images using the same techniques.

The Academy Member that has the wimnning image from each week will go forward to the Grand Final Challenge.

The Winner of the February Challenge will win:

50% off a FULL
Photographic Workshop / Experience Day
Voucher
Valid for 12 Months

Well done to everyone who participated in the first part of the Challenge. We will post the results sometime during this week of the winning Academy Member / Image who will then go into the final Challenge at the end of the month.

Good Luck Everyone and make sure you have some fun while you get the best from YOU Camera.

Eif is out on a job at the moment and when he returns he will upload an image to show an example.

LASER

Strapped a laser pointer to the side of my lens, pointed it at a mirror, and tried to get the returning laser beam to pass closely to the other side of the lens.
Quite tricky.
I like how it shows up all the dust in the air, and how the reflected beam is a bit wider and not quite as intense.
A bit geeky really.
Because it took so long to set up and get right, the laser batteries had almost died by the time I took this shot.
My solution:
1. Make the camera more sensitive to light by cranking up the ISO.
2. Don't care about any resulting grainy textures.

Besides, if it looks really bad, you can always make it black & white and call it 'art.'

Found this week's challenging, as I'm not a big fan of high ISO's due to the noise it creates in the shot. My plan was to do some star-trails, but on the nights its clear I've been busy and when I did get time it was too cloudy - typical :o)

Sorry its a day late (!) - This was taken on a dark dull rainy day in Chester with the camera in apature priority mode fixed at F1.8 but even at that apature the shutter speed still wasnt fast enough so I bumped up the ISO manually to 1600 to give me a shutter speed of 1/125 sec which was enough to freeze these people walking past.....

Hey Guys.

With everything that has been going on we are a bit behind. We are going to extend the ISO challenge into this week and then do the final round next week.

Really need to finish off the website and the galleries and Eif is out everyday this week leaving me to do all the office / pooter stuff....

So, you have an extra week to play some more with you ISO and then next Monday we we will give the final round subject.

This Week (Monday 28h Feb - Sunday 06 March)... Previous post will explain why we are extending this comp into March.

...WHITE BALANCE.

Your image will need to show that you understand what White Balance does ...

Use your white balance control on you camera to give your picture a different look. By altering the colour temperature (white balance) you can give your photo a whole new look, go on, give it a try.

In the examples Eif has taken the same shot at auto white balance and then at Tungsten giving it that blue look.

You can either choose the white balance on your camera before you shoot (jpeg only) or, if shooting in RAW alter the white balance when processing.

The Academy Member that has the wimnning image from each week will go forward to the Grand Final Challenge.

The Winner of the February Challenge will win:

50% off a FULL

Well done to everyone who participated in theChallenge so far. We will post the results on 8th March and tell you who will be going through to the final round and Challenge to win the whole competition.

Shot in RAW, with a 2500K custom WB set on-camera, and a Cokin P700 IR filter. Processed the 3 RAW's in Photomatix as a HDR image intially and small retouches in PS Elements 7 afterwards.

The Sony A200 was a creat camera for doing these IR shots, but the newer A550 I have now must be coated against IR waves and doesnt get good results at all. May even look at getting the A200 converted for outright IR use.... hmmmm.

Thanks very much for choosing my shots!!

Wish I'd had more time to put towards this round... but the last few weeks have been mad for me work-wise..

I used a higher ISO to try and catch some detail in the cliff on the right as it was in alot of shadow, even though that doesnt help me get a long shutter speed which I wanted for the waves. As it happens the wave motion came out great at 1/15, and I tried to use a low-angle to achieve some depth of field whilst still using a narrow aperture.

Entry 2:

'A Bronze Age'

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5018/5544979624_98a029e159.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jixxer/5544979624/)

Cokin Soft ND8 Grad Filter

Again a low-angle to incorporate the foreground and get a sense of depth into the shot, whilst trying to capture flowing movement in the skies with a long exposure time. ISO was kept to a minimum to reduce noise on a 30sec exposure.

Thanks for an enjoyable competition everyone, been some fantastic shots put up :)

Used the widest aperture I could here to give a sense of depth/separation between the foreground and background

This was a very bright scene, so I used bracketing and HDR processing to allow the sky, the foreground and the background to remain correctly(?) exposed, colourful and detailed.

Hope you like it!

Was there some form of 'chicken' going on here, waiting for the others to post before unleashing these?! :D

All four posted today so far are brilliant, glad I don't need to pick a winner! Made my mind up for me though I definitely need to get me one of those big stopper filters to have a play around with

Found the fact that I had to choose my own subject really difficult. Couldn't think of anything to capture for a long time. In the end I had to make a decision as the closing date was looming!!!

PIANIST

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/65516590@N00/5577715608/" title="David by jankgmn, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5296/5577715608_97b40a8e12.jpg" width="500" height="334" alt="David"></a>

I wanted to keep most of the image in focus so as to use a slow shutter speed to get the feeling of movement in the pianists hands. I also wanted to make use of the reflection on the piano's surface. I also liked the idea that the image was mainly black and white apart from the hands and the piano make.

GARDEN VIEW - HDR

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/65516590@N00/5577130031/" title="Garden view HDR by jankgmn, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5101/5577130031_f6b3ca8de3.jpg" width="500" height="329" alt="Garden view HDR"></a>

I waited to catch the moment that the sky was very cloudy and moody over the mountains but the garden was bathed in sunlight for a brief moment in time. HDR seemed the best technique to capture that moment. f13 helped keep the image sharp from front to back.

Hi Guys.

Back in the office today and we will announce the winner later on today. :)

Hey Carol, who would you choose?? Yesterday at the workshop, everyone had a different opinion. All three have done a great job and all three are very different.

Lee :)

A very difficult job judging this one.
All the entries are great, this shows that you know how to use your camera in different and sometimes difficult situations.

Well done to all of you but there can only be one winner.

Kris Williams takes the honours this time.
Congratulations Kris. We chose your images because, you show an understanding of your camera in various situations, use of slow shutter speed, a good use of filters, understand how to use depth of field and for braving the water in the low angle image.

Kris will shortly be recieving an e-mail from Lee about his hard earned prize.

Thank you to all who took part in this competition.

Lee and Eifion.

Well done Kris. As well as the image itself Eif needed to judge to see if all the technical stuff was right, that's why I couldnt do it Carol and why it took longer. It was more than just choosing the best looking image.

Kris, I will pop the extra voucher into your Membership pack and when I FINALLY get to meet you, you will get it.... Hope that it is soon ;)

Well done again and congratulations.

Thanks to everyone taking part.

Lee :)
