Photographer of the Month Challenge...


Here is a brand new CHALLENGE for you to get your Photography kick-started for 2011.

The Challenge, is simple....

Starting tomorrow 01 January 2011...

...Take ONE Photograph each DAY and upload it on THIS Thread. ONLY ONE image per member, per day.

The Photograph MUST have been taken on THAT Day. It can be any subject and topic and different for each day.

You can upload the image from 12.01am (Midnight) to 11.59pm on any given day.

Only Photographs posted to the forum are eligiable. Any images sent via email will not be accepted. No image will be used by Welshot Imaging Ltd without prior arrangement with the author.

The best three images of the day will be given points.

3 = Winner
2 = Second
1 = Third

This means if you happen to miss a day, you could still catch up in the points and win.



At the end of the Month the Member with the highest total of points will Win this fantastic bundle of prizes...

Day 2 - Christmas tree fairy!

Hello Everyone.

For some unknown reason (probaly user error) Eif and I could not log onto the forum from home, and when we did it kept logging us out and we lost info we had posted.

Anyway, here are the results and it gets us up-to-date now.

Eifion and I are using people in the other Marina Offices to help choose winners. Lots of things are taken into consideration and we will try to explain as we go along....

1st January 2011 results

1st Place = 3 points: Yvonne Clowes with War Memorial. Love how you went in close here Yvonne and just consentrated on a small area. Love the detail.

2nd Place = 2 points: Richie Roberts with Starbucks Dubai Style. For the simple reason, You looked UP. You didnt just use the obvious and you wanted to portray the surroundings around you to others looking.

3rd Place - 1 point: Peter Sackett with Droopy Grass. The person who chose this image loved the fact you captured the water droplets forming and the fact that the whole background was out of focus. Thus concentrationg on the droopy grass.

2nd January 2011

1st Place = 3 points: Richie Roberts with Down on the Beach. Simple, stunning colours and love how the rays of light come out from behind the clouds. Again you are capturing the life and surroundings around you.

2nd Place = 2 points: Peter Sackett with Resident of Grosvenor Park. What an amzing capture. Sharp, interesting, engaging to the viewer and close. Not a lot of wasted space.

3rd Place = 1 point: Carol Jones with Can of Coke. Pure and simple this was chosen not only because it been technically well captured (look at the bubbles on the rim) but also because You just used your environment around you and what you had near you. If you used your imagination and dia a "John Arnold" you could take 101 images of a coke can.... Love the angle and the fact you have gone for part of it, not all of it.

1st Place = 3 points is Richie Roberts with Climbing Wall.

Simply Brilliant. And has the WOW factor. Stuart was very impressed Richie. Had every element of emotion in it. (Although Im beginning to think you dont work in Dubai very much... Was hoping to see your office lol ;) )


2nd Pace = 2 points is Carol Jones with Anchor at Rhos Point.

Lovely and simple, great Black & White, well seen and I personally love how you have gone in tight on the crop.


3rd Place = 1 point is Peter Sackett with Self Portrait

Very clever indeed in how you did it. You had Eif thinking for a moment until he realised how you had achieved it ( I can see a module at an Academy Evening coming on.... )

Day Four Results for 4th January 2011:


Today Eifion and I thought that we should give some consideration to the technical side of things today.

So...

1st Place = 3 points is Peter Sackett for Llandudno Pier Cafe. Superb HDR and Tonemapped image Peter. Well processed and natural looking. Love the subject as well.

2nd Place = 2 points is Carol Jones with Wooden Ornament. Great use of lighting skills and you are putting into practise all the things you have been learning in your very own home. Just goes to show that you can experiment, learn, have fun from your armchair. Well done.

3rd Place = 1 point is Richie Roberts with Derelict Water Tower. Great view point and angle Richie. Composition and style is very stylized and unusual because of the lens you have used.

Day 9 Results for 9th January 2011:


1st Place = 3 points is Carol Jones with Bossons Fisherman. Just superb and look at the character in that face. Do you think this person would model for the Academy Carol. Superb and very well done. Love the crop.

2nd Place = 2 points Peter Sackett. Dedicated Sailor. Love the composition and the colours on this one Peter. I love how you can even see the persons eyes looking at what theyare looking at doing. Well done.

3rd Place = 1 point Sian Davies. Sunday Image. Love the colour of the Sunset Sian.

Eifion and I would like to apologise to Sian Davies. Eifion did not read her comment properly on her Boat Image submitted on day 8 and before reading the comment had intended to give it 3 points. He mis read the comments and thought the image had not been taken that day so did not award the points.

We have added 3 points to Sian's score as a way of rectifying this mistake so on day 8 Sian and Richie came joint 1st.

Lee, sorry, I should have explained the heart monitor is unfortunatley for a friend of mine (who is very well fortunatley), but he wont be when he gets outof hospital as he frightened the life out of me by sneakily unplugging the machine just as I snapped the shot and set of the alarms! he then got a good telling off himself as he was laughing so hard his heart rate went through the roof!! at that point we were ejected from the ward :-(

Hello folks,

Going to bed before the computer and the will to live get turfed through the bloody window....

When you say you're at step six is that using the guide Lee has linked to?

So you've got as far as browsing through your pc for the image file but it wont let you copy it to the server? Where are you seeing the exclamation mark, on your computer or the web page?

If you hover your mouse over the red circle what does it say ? - I tried the "attach" method rather than posting via FlickR and I got the red circle and it said "file too large" so maybe your image is too big up upload.

Have you tried resizing your image to make it smaller?

That would make sense. Not sure what the size limit is, I'll ask Chris (FlatAnt) when I see him. If you create a jpg from your original image thats about 600pixels on the longest edge it should easily be within the limit.

The real credit must go to mother nature for creating all manner of interesting things to shoot, and also to Nikon, whose D300s coped extremely well with -17C and being partly iced up!
The grainy texture is created by millions of little hoar frost crystals (i think), close up they look like this:

photo montage of my bathroom - inspired by lee's blog about john arnold and his “Take 101 pictures with YOUR camera in YOUR bathroom Challenge”….

i have had great fun with the january challenge and have loved looking at everyone's photos. but NEVER AGAIN will i commit to one a day!! ha ha - i have dreams in different depths of field! honest!

Like Carol, I've really enjoyed the challenge. There have been some teriffic photos - In a perverse way I'll miss the daily challenge (although I'm aiming for a 365 project, the pressure of competition wont be there).

I thought the January challenge was a great idea and very nicely timed.

I'm afraid you'll all be terribly disappointed by the mysterious circle!
The shot was taken with the D300s attached to the trusty Gorillapod, wrapped around the banister of the balcony.
It was taken at ISO 500 with a 20mm lens, f2.8 and a 30 second exposure.

The intention was shoot the night sky withOUT star trails, so the tricky part was setting the camera to be sensitive enough to register all the detail but restricting the shutter speed to avoid the trailing of the stars.

I had to do some post-processing to keep the mountains in the distance visible after converting to jpeg for Flickr; the mysterious circle is just a remnant of some hastily-applied filters!

Sorry to disappoint!

Carol. The Depth of Field is only for the FIRST week of Feb. Each week we will be having a different theme. So you will get a bit of a respite next week lol
