I was talking to Eifion about a couple of noise reduction settings that you can use when shooting at night and thought I would share a couple of good links I have found on the subject:

Hints for Night Photography:

Massive number of Hot Pixels on 5D Mark II

Note the section about "long exposure noise reductionlong exposure noise reduction"

Only issue I can see is that it seems to double the time it takes for the camera to take and save the image as it takes another 2nd exposure (with the mirror down) and uses that to subject from the original image.

Thanks to Eifion for pointing this out to me and a little gutted I didnt know about this sooner ;)

Thanks for this Mark.

Must have been what was slowing me down the other night.

I've never used the noise reduction for the double exposure time - I've shot 10 minute exposures many times and that would be too painful to to have to wait an extra 10 minutes!!!

use a low ISO and a bit of noise reduction in processing, job done

I don't use it either for anything over a few seconds. It hammers the battery and lightroom is just as good at getting shot of the hot pixels.
