I can see that you have been doing some homework looking through what is available for what you want. And I've read what Rob has said to you, he is on the same wavelength as me.

I still think that a 70-200 2.8 is the best all rounder to go for, you could then add a tele-converter ( 1.4 or 2x ), the 1.4 will only lose you one stop of light , then giving you a length of around 340or so at F4, or with the 2x converter 400 at 5.6.

When you go for fast lenses like the 2.8 you will find that they get heavier due to the larger glass area needed to capture more light, these usually come with a tripod mount to help you keep them steady. Some now have a built in Stabaliser System to enable you to shoot at lower light levels, but these come at a price.

The 120-300 2.8 that Rob suggested is £2393 so maybe out of your price range.

There is a 120-400 4.5-5.6 priced at £597 but that weighs in at nearly 2 kilos, a bit heavy maybe.

Stick with what you have got (for now) and learn that inside out, you may not even want to do sports photography on a regular basis and might find you need something else.

Hope this helps, you know where I am if you want to talk further but I do think expolring and learning with the kit you have got is the best thing to do. For now.
