photoshop help

i wonder if anyone could help here? when using the rectangular marquee tool set to fixed size 8 by 10, as soon as i click on to the image to start the selection, the selection border appears as the fixed size but does not allow me to drag to adjust the selection. i can only move the selection, not increase its size by dragging.
any suggestions, please?

Hi Carol

If you have set to a fixed size, then by definition, you cannot change the size. You need fixed ratio, set at the dimensions you want, then you can make your selection, and it will always be fixed ratio, but any size you want.

hi thanks anthony. i thought i had been doing it for months - using 8 by 10 and then clicking and dragging to include the part of the image i wanted but still ensuring it would print at 8 by 10? no? oh well, maybe i had been using ratio all along. no hope!! thanks again though.
