What is noise ??

Noise is the digital equivelent of film grain.

It looks like ugly speckles on your photographs.

The reasons for noise are:

Sensors in cameras generate different levels of heat as they operate.
Raising the ISO will increase the noise level.
Low light will also generate more noise.

Small sensors in compact cameras are more prone to noise than the larger sensors in DSLR's which contain the same amount of pixels, a compact can have 10 million pixels as can a DSLR but the pixels are spread over a larger area resulting in better noise control.

Higher ISO levels amplify the signal that the sensor has to read, by doing this we also amplify the electrical noise. A number of cameras now have better control over this but many earlier models are prone to levels of noise above 400 iso.

Low light also creates a problem for the sensor ,there isnt enough light for a normal exposure. The sensor has to be exposed for much longer to obtain the image, this therefore leads to more electrical noise.

What's your opinion on the pixel race , are Camera firms listening to what we as photographers really want ?
