Flickr has a wide range of options for you to control how your images are used. In the top right of flickr there will be a line of text that says
signed in as "your username"
if you click on your username you are taken to your profile settings. From here you can decide how you want to use the service. I'm assuming for this post that free accounts get roughly the same options as the pro one I'm working with.
The first tab is your personal information. On this tab you can create a buddy icon, this is essentially the same as the avatars on this board. It's a small image that appears next to your name when people view your photostream. If you don't create a buddy icon it will just use the default blank face (like mel and eifion have at the moment). You can also fill out your profile with your details if you wish. Again this can all be left blank if you'd prefer.
You can also create, if you haven't already, a web address for your photostream. This will be in the format www.flickr.com/photos/yourwebaddress where you pick the last bit. This makes it easy to direct people to your photo's.
The second tab is privacy and permissions. This is the page where you can lock down or open up the rights to your images. Most of the options are fairly self explanatory, if you need any guidance please ask. Of the global options there are three that I'll briefly mention here,
Allow your stuff to be added to a gallery ?
Galleries are collections of favourite images. For example I can create a gallery in my account that contains my favourite pictures on flickr, as long as the owner of that image has this option set to yes. If you set this option to no then I could not add a link to your image to my gallery. There is no right setting for this it is entirely down to how you feel about others viewing your work.
Make your photos eligible for invitation by Getty Images?
If set to yes you may be invited to submit an image to Getty Images stock library. Again set to whatever you feel like.
Share your public photos on Yahoo! Updates?
That yahoo account you created to sign up now has your profile floating somewhere round cyberspace. Yahoo has an updates page, a bit like facebook or a blog. Yours will be blank unless you've used it previously. Turning this option off stops flickr updating your yahoo profile every time you do something.
The defaults for new updates section is again pretty straightforward. This is where you decide who can see and comment on your images, what copyright level to apply to your images and what safety rating to give them. You can always change an individual image through the organize (sic) button at the top of each flickr page.
One thing to note. Even if you have all the settings locked down when you submit an image to a group then some rights are inherited from the group. For example you have an image that is set to not be viewable by anyone. When you submit it to the group it will be viewable by everyone and group members will be able to comment and add tags to the image. The copyright, exif and other details will stay the same but you should be aware of the changes.
Third tab is email, again should be straight forward, decide what events if any you want to trigger an email to you. May also contain email addresses for you to send images to for them to automatically appear on flick and other services.
Fourth tab is links to other services, link your flickr account to twitter/facebook/etc etc. This then allows you to send images to these other services.
Right need a cup of tea now. Any questions please ask.
